Special Topic Analysis Paper
This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever written. It was an assignment for my first every Literature specific class. We could write on any topic as long as we referred to a work that we studied that semester. Baz Luhrman’s 2022 film Elvis highlighted a new light of the sensational Elvis Presley. Many authors and journalists have written about the hyper sexualization of women many times and rightly so. However, the hyper sexualization of men is very rarely discussed. The film Elvis brought this concept to my eyes as we watched a young boy be grabbed and touched by strangers as he sang. The first scene we see Elvis perform in his small hometown shocked me. The reaction of his mother and the confusion on his face showed how strange it actually is the way that people obsess over a person’s body. It showed how simple dance moves can send a group of women into a frenzy where they lose all sense of respect and humanity. This is a concept that has been a part of society for so long, yet we avoid discussing it unless it’s about women. So, I wanted to jump into that concept and use the biggest household name to show how bizarre our hyper sexualization of young boys really is. Along with how that hyper sexualization effects those we obsess over.
